With the official blessing and guidance of His Grace, Bishop Maxim, we are proud to announce this year’s Orthodox MontaNIKA conference. The theme of the MontaNIKA conference for 2025 has been carefully chosen to be “Therapeia.” We invite you to join us next year to learn the meaning of Orthodox therapeia from the very best scholars, speakers, and licensed Orthodox therapists, including priests and bishops (His Grace, Bishop Maxim being the Keynote Speaker). Speakers

Bishop Maxim

Bishop Maxim

Bishop Maxim (Vasiljevic) was elected Bishop of Los Angeles and the Western American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 2006. He graduated from the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, University of Belgrade, in 1993. He completed his Master of Theology at the University of Athens in 1996, and then three years later, in 1999, at the same university, he defended his doctorate in the field of Dogmatics and Patristics. He worked for one year on his post-doctorate in Paris and the Sorbonne in 2003-04, in the field of Byzantine History and Hagiography. During this time, he also delved in the theory and practical application of painting at the French Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. Bishop Maxim is a professor of Patristics and was teaching Christian Anthropology, Byzantine Philosophy, Canon Law, and Dogmatics at various universities and schools. He speaks Greek, French, Russian, and English. He was the editor of “Theology” – Journal of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, University of Belgrade. He also leads the Diocesan school of iconography. Bishop Maxim’s scholarly books, studies, and articles include essays on Holy Fathers and Saints; he has also written on the hagiographical and iconographical themes.

Father Vasileios Thermos

Rev. Vasileios Thermos, M.D., Ph.D. studied at the Medical School of Athens University and the Theological School. He was specialized in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry which he still practices in Athens. In 1986 he was ordained and keeps serving at the diocese of Viotia. He has been engaged into training programs for clergy in Greece, Cyprus, and the USA. He was also a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Divinity School; he took classes also in Harvard School of Arts and Humanities, Boston College, Boston University, Andover Newton Theological School. In 1997 he received his PhD in Pastoral Psychology from the Theological School of Athens University. In 2014 he worked for 3 months as a Visiting Research Scholar at the Institute of Medical Humanities of the Medical School of Texas University. He has also conducted a research on clergy health and burnout. He has written numerous books and articles in Greek and is the editor of a journal in Greek (Psyches dromoi: Ways of the Soul). He has been a member of scientific committees organizing conferences on the relationship between theology and psychiatry/psychology. He has also given thousands of lectures to seminars, parents groups, clergy assemblies, camps, high schools, radio and TV etc. Fr. Vasileios was a Visiting Professor of Pastoral Psychology and Psychology of Religion in the Theological Academy of the Orthodox Church of Albania. He taught Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Psychology in the University Ecclesiastical Academy of Athens for 11 years and retired in 2024.

Father Panayiotis Tekosis

With the blessing of Bishop Maxim of the Serbian Diocese of Western America, Fr Panayiotis Tekosis moved to Saint Herman's Orthodox Christian Parish in August of 2021. He is married to Matushka Kathryn and together they have six children. Fr Panayiotis was born and raised in the Orthodox Church in Greece. He was formed in the Orthodox faith by the piety of the priests serving at the parish of his youth and the many notable Orthodox theologians teaching the generation of his time. Fr Panayiotis, who is fluent in both English and Greek, completed formal theological studies at St Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary and St Stephen's House of Studies at the Antiochian Village. He studied Orthodox patristics and pastoral theology under the late Metropolitan of Diokleia, Kallistos (Ware) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Fr Pan studied existential-phenomenological psychotherapy in England and worked in mental health and human services for over a decade. He also holds degrees in business and organizational behavior.

Fr. Turbo Qualls

Fr. Turbo Qualls is the rector of St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Church in Kansas City Missouri. Fr Turbo is an iconographer, and spiritual director for the St. Elizabeth sisterhood, which is an urban monastic community and the Mount Tabor school of Liberal Arts, which provides classical education that is rooted in Orthodox tradition. Fr Turbo holds graduate and postgraduate degrees in Addiction Studies and Pastoral counseling with an emphasis in crisis response and trauma.

Therapeia Workshop Instructors

Protopresbyter Fr. Russell Radoicich

Father Russell Radoicich is the parish priest at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Butte, MT. Father was elevated to Protopresbyter and awarded the Jeweled-Cross by His Grace Bishop Maxim in June 2023. Fr. Russell has been the pillar of Orthodoxy in Montana for over 20 years, building mission parishes, serving almost all the parishes throughout Montana before they received their current priests, and helping those in need. Father has experience in counseling, addiction therapy, as well as leadership training.

Archpriest Fr. Andrew Moore

Father Andrew Moore is the Archpriest of St. Mark the Evangelist Mission (OCA) in Great Falls, MT and serves as the Senior Priest of all Montana. Once a former Lutheran pastor, Father has served as an Orthodox priest for over twenty-five years. Father Andrew continues to draw on his rich pastoral experience and has been vital in growing Orthodoxy in Montana, which can be seen in his own thriving parish.

Father Deacon Ananias

Fr. Deacon Ananias Sorem, PhD is CEO, Founder, and President of Patristic Faith, as well as the Founder and Organizer of Orthodox MontaNika. Father is an Orthodox apologist and teaches Philosophy at Carroll College. He serves with Fr. Russell Rodoicich at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Butte, MT. Fr. Deacon has a BA in Liberal Arts from Thomas Aquinas College, together with an MA (Honors) and PhD in Philosophy (Epistemology; Philosophy of Science; Philosophy of Mind) from University College Dublin. His current academic work focuses on philosophical theology, epistemology, and the philosophy of science. Father is the author of several articles and peer-reviewed papers. He is also known for his YouTube channel, the Norwegian Nous (now Patristic Faith), where he provides content on theology, apologetics, logic, and philosophy.

Sarah Barry

Sarah is an Orthodox Christian and member of Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church who is a Licensed Professional Counselor both in the State of Louisiana as well as a in the State of Montana. She received her Master's degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in May of 2016. She has experience in family counseling, couples counseling, as well as individual counseling. Sarah is also trained in the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy model and has years of experience in working with Anxiety Disorders, Depression Disorders, Grief, Post-Partum struggles for new mothers (and fathers) as well as Eating Disorders. She currently works with patients, including veterans, to address Thinking Errors and Negative Core beliefs that contribute to continued symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and overall stress.

Gill Orr, SUDP

Gill Orr is a parishioner at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Butte and the owner and operator of Cedar Grove Counseling a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Washington State. His education includes technical degrees in counseling and computer science. He has numerous certifications in addiction free pain management, neurofeedback and trauma. He has completed promising research on neurofeedback and its ability to increase addiction recovery rates for individuals with severe trauma. He has worked in the addiction field since 1987 and operated Cedar Grove since 2005. He believes that most of his success in working with others has come from his own experience as a recovering alcoholic/addict. His goals for the future are to continue to work with others who suffer from addiction of any kind whether chemical or behavioral, and considers his own struggle and his vocation as a gift. He looks forward to continuing this work.

Charlene Colwell, MSW, LICSW

Charlene Colwell, MSW, LICSW is a member and choir conductor at St. Basil of Ostrog Serbian Orthodox Church in Chisholm, MN. She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in both Minnesota and Massachusetts. She obtained a BA in Psychology from North Central University and a Masters in Clinical Social Work from St.Catherine University/University of St.Thomas. She has completed some courses in Orthodox Theology and Byzantine Musicology through the Antiochian House of Studies. She has been working in the mental health field since 2008 (ie. inpatient psychiatric unit, elementary school, adjunct professor), and the past 13 years has been a psychotherapist. She has her own private practice Restoring Waters Counseling, where she works as a therapist, clinical consultant, and a clinical supervisor for new therapists in the field. She specializes in working with individuals who suffer from OCD, anxiety, and trauma experiences. Her work with clients focuses on helping them to connect with, and release the burdens and emotional wounds that can so often lie at the root of mental suffering. She utilizes a holistic approach in her counseling and integrates trauma processing and anxiety reduction methods including Internal Family Systems, EMDR, as well as Exposure and Response Prevention. The Orthodox teachings on the passions, taking up our cross, and that suffering can be used for our transformation, inspires her work as a therapist.
