Cannabis and Christianity

Cannabis and Christianity

When we’re considering cannabis or marijuana, we need to understand first of all that cannabis, and its use is completely at odds with the Christian life. It’s completely incompatible with living an Orthodox Christian life. There are many liberal modern groups that may disagree with us, but this is the Orthodox perspective. And so for Orthodox Christians, this talk really is an explanation of the spiritual harm that the person who consumes cannabis places themselves. The contemporary world is completely at odds with Orthodox thinking about this. It’s up to us to decide. Who we will hear? The world or will we listen to the Orthodox faith?

    1. Are there medical exemptions? I was diagnosed autistic after a concern of mild schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. After years of therapy, medicinal combinations, and counciling (was still practicing protestant at the time) medical cannabis was suggested. I went from terrible anxiety attacks and episodes where reality/sanity would nearly slip away to being able to manage and engage in activities and social interactions I was unable to prior. I'm desiring to love Christ more than anything. In such pursuit I've recognized a concern your video addresses, that depending on the way/timing/amount of cannabis I consume it definitely presents an obstacle to spiritual growth and daily prayer. In attempting to quite however my medical ailments return. I'm conflicted as I obviously would prefer sanity over insanity, but desire to serve Christ as he wishes.

  1. Hello Father,

I have questions on these statements. I must ask for the consumption of substances that can be utilized as medicine but can alter the state of the mind, does the church ban the usage of alcohol or opiates for pain relief and psilocybin or LSD for PTSD treatments, tobacco for poisonous bites & skin infections, etc. If the church does then, I will admit it is atleast consistent in it teachings.

However, the position I see revealed in scripture is based from 1 Corinthians 10:31 is, "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God". As long as the substance does not become an idol itself or was utilized in idol worship before we came upon it, any substance can be utilized to edify our worship of God with our fitness being one of the main ways we worship.

In 1 Timothy 5:23, we have the recommendation of adding wine to water to calm the stomach and heal infirmities. In Proverbs 31:5-6, we have revelations written to us by King Solomon, telling us to give relief in the form of spirits to an individual on their deathbed. Clearly the pouring of libations has been used for offerings to our savior Jesus Christ in Noah/Abraham covenant times, but libations have been used in other religions and cults as offerings as well. Should those under the covenant have rejected the use of alcohol because others were using it for destructive purposes?

The case I present Father is that if the food, beverage, or substance can be used for the glory of God, then the church should let it be, just as it is revealed to us in the scriptures.

  2. That’s crazy I remember the Bible stated “god walked with Adam and said all of this is yours the birds in the air the fish of the sea and the plants of the forest to do with as you please”

I also remember that anything in large consumption is a sin even water or air or food
